Why we chose Jaipur

A visit to the press that sets our stationery, in its fifth decade and third generation.

The Lotus press in Jaipur runs three hand-fed platens, a foil stamp, and a wooden type case that has been in the family since 1978. We pay a little more. The card feels different in the hand.

When we say "hand-set" we mean it literally. A woman named Vandana pulls type, letter by letter, the same way her aunt taught her. She signs the back of every proof with a pencil.

“Stationery is not where you save money. It is the first object a guest holds.”
— Neel Ananya

We chose Jaipur because the press was still there. We could have worked with a foil shop in Los Angeles. The cards would be fine. They would not carry the hand of someone who has been setting type for twenty-two years. That hand is what you are buying, and it is not available at scale.
